For Make Believers Friday

“I couldn’t wait for success, so I went ahead without it.” ~ Jonathan Winters

My mentor Judith Paige Mitchell told me something profound once. She said – “Monice, if you keep judging your success by the success of others, you’re doomed to fail.”

O.K., she told me this years ago and I suspect I’m paraphrasing a bit, but the point she was making is as clear to me now as it was then – I need to stay in my own lane.

But that just begs the question: What about all those other drivers on the road?

Fam, we’re all kicking ass to get “there,” and while we’re following different directions from our personal G.P.S’s, there is one common denominator — We’re all on  a journey. To succeed, to fail, to whatever it is we’re striving to do, each of us are encountering and overcoming obstacles on a daily.

The problem is that when we make it “there,” that’s not what folks want to talk about. Instead, success is painted as a perfect picture, devoid  of cracks and holes and scratches. In short, it’s a fairy tale. And while I am a storyteller, I’ve decided that For Maker Believers Friday is going to be just the opposite of that.

Starting next week, I’ll be posting profiles on some of my sister/fellow artistpreneurs – some I’ve recently connected with and others I’ve known for decades, 20 years or more.

They’ve all been gracious enough to pull over the side of the road and engage in some of the most transparent, enlightening convos I’ve had in a very long time.

Fam, I’m talking about the real deal — the ups and downs of being an artistpreneur and what success does or doesn’t look like for them. I’ve been so impressed and honored about how open my friends have been and I promise to do my best to distill our dialogues into something I hope will be empowering to you.

So far I’ve spoken with filmmaker Nicole Sylvester, storyteller Oba William King and writer Nichole Christian. I can’t wait to see who I’ll be fellowshipping with next!

Stay tuned!
